Probably in the "calculator" function. There is where that "index" is calculated.

MarkerClusterer.prototype.calculator_ = function(markers, numStyles) {
...

In the original it change at steps "x10". Maybe you could alter your override depending on the zoom level or some other available data before the cluster is computed/rendered.

@dylanfitz fwiw, here's what I did to adjust the steps.

  • Save https://googlemaps.github.io/js-marker-clusterer/src/markerclusterer.js to a local file.

  • Replace this:

    MarkerClusterer.prototype.calculator_ = function(markers, numStyles) {
      var index = 0;
      var count = markers.length;
      var dv = count;
      while (dv !== 0) {
        dv = parseInt(dv / 10, 10);
        index++;
      }
  • With this:

    MarkerClusterer.prototype.calculator_ = function(markers, numStyles) {
      var index = 1;
      var count = markers.length;
      var dv = count;
      dv = parseInt(dv);
      if(dv >= 20) {
        index = 5;
      } else if(dv >= 10) {
        index = 4;
      } else if(dv >= 5) {
        index = 3;
      } else if(dv >= 3) {
        index = 2;
      }

Now I get clusters at steps of 2 (default minimum cluster size), 3, 5, 10, and 20. It's not math-y like the base-10 scale, and is not generalized, but it's good enough for a very specific use case.
