encoder is very slow - can we skip Butteraugli optimization and use fixed quality settings? about pik HOT 6 CLOSED

Fast encoding is possible. We have an internal encoder that runs already at 45 MB/s, but it is even less mature than the current slow encoder. I don't know how much worse it is on the size/quality curve, but anticipate that it is about 15 % worse. I hope that we can make it available within three months.

@jonsneyers latest version of pik seems to be much faster now in my view.Try recompiling pik.

I'm working on making the slow mode at least a bit faster.

I used the latest git and the speed significantly improved, still around 2,000 seconds per image at 0.5 distance, but it's not as bad as before where a whole night wouldn't process one image.

FYI the current AVX2 encoder processes about 0.40 MB/s (distance 1..2), or 26 MB/s (fast mode, distance 1).

We haven't optimized it yet, so there is lots of headroom, but it's already substantially faster than Guetzli (40 or 2800x speedup).
