AFAIR Ripple doesn't use any special API that would make it require to be compiled with MariaDB client. So it should compile with MySQL client, but since as you've noticed the set of headers can be different, the BUILD file needs an adjustment. I'll try to take a look at what kind of changes are needed, but feel free to tune it yourself.

AFAIK, libmariadbclient-dev include directory hierarchy had been changed a lot.
If you utilize Ubuntu 20.04 LTS to build mysql-ripple, you will get a include file not found error.
Please consider refine external_libs.BUILD.bazel includes
Reclaim: MariaDB include directory hierarchy changed since 10.2.x, mysql-ripple was built upon MariaDB 10.1, and is the only workable version without any modification.
