One of the problems (I haven't investigated enough to say that it's the only problem) is that we're doing an O(n) scan for matching invocations in ReplayProxyMixin._nextEvent(), which given m invocations, means our overall algorithm for replaying a recording is O(n^m). That explains why a sufficiently large recording appears to hang the process.
