I really like your mock-up! It looks intuitive and elegant. I've also been thinking about adding navigation "hints" to the edges of the workspace, sort of like how dev environments will put information indicators in the scrollbar area:

Maybe it would be worth expanding the mini-map demo into an alternative navigation methods demo?

I wonder if the grid (in the event there is one) should display outside the rect. I tend to think it should, since otherwise it is sending a strong signal that users must drop blocks only within the rect.

Presumably there'd also need to be a min width and height, since otherwise an empty workspace or a single small block would look pretty bad.

I just transferred this issue from blockly core to this repo--it seems like a good candidate for a plugin.

New plugin added in #675. It depends on some changes in Blockly core for performance so it currently lives on the q2_2021_release branch and should be available after the next release of Blockly.
