Mostly as an FYI... have just tried this, albeit with current versions of U-boot [1] and bloaty [2], both built from source with gcc 7.5.0--3ubuntu1~18.04.

The basic bloaty u-boot now gives proper output rather than an error message. Not sure yet if the fix was in bloaty, u-boot, or both.

However bloaty -d compileunits u-boot produces an error: symtab section pointed to non-strtab section (yes u-boot is compiled with debug info)
