I think I've made a decision, sympy matrix.

To clarify: my main reason choosing 1) was so that linear algebra would be simpler (symbolic matrices are SymPy Matrix objects).

OTOH, one case where things don't always work well is vpa (variable precision floating point) objects. SymPy is poor w.r.t. numerical stability considerations (focus is on symbolic computations). Its possible---but not tested---that having Octave-native arrays would allow better variable precision computations by running Octave code instead with only scalar arithmetic done by Python. At the time I assumed most such routines were in C++ and not accessible to @sym objects, but one could experiment...
