I don't agree. If we follow WeeChat's philosophy, the core doesn't do much. Transforming URLs into <a>s is the job of a plugin. Plugins may be daisy chained and prioritized so that the YouTube plugin will transform its own URLs, then the image plugin, etc. and finally the generic link plugin which will create <a>s for any link that's not been taken care of.
