P.S. In case it's not clear, the goal here is that teachers/superfans could run a variation of this workshop with minimal effort.

Would it be fair to say that the workbooks on the site are student-focused, rather than intended for the person who runs the workshop?

We certainly could use help and thoughts on this, but the goal that @jordanmccullough and I have been working towards on the workbook is that the "Details" mode serves instructors preparing for a class in addition to serving students wanting a deep dive. The workbook is matched section-to-section to the slides for ease of use of both in a given class.

Ah ok, so do you think Up & Running would be a good fit alongside the others?

@afeld We certainly share aspirations on /materials being helpful to both serve information to students and be a tool that teachers can use to teach GitHub materials easily by giving them the "full package" of a how and what. As long as we're all open-minded to constant change (always be iterating!), let's have @jordanmccullough weigh in, and then give putting this into /materials a try. @jordanmccullough has a PSD comp of a section-based design that he wanted to PR and land in a matter of a few days or something. Here's a stab at a plan (change anything!):

  1. Ping @jordanmccullough (here's that ping) for an update on his next PR on section-based design for the materials page.
  2. Get @jordanmccullough's quick input on if a "how-to-workshop" can easily fit into the sections. Maybe it is a "how to teach" section that lines up with https://github.com/github/training-team/issues/297.
  3. Let's build it, add it in and see how it fits. We can always shift things.

Question for @brntbeer to get all the possible avenues considered: Does a "Teach students how to building a GitHub Pages" feel like a Guide? Since there's a "contributing to open source one," the thought came to mind to ask about this one.

And here's that design update PR. More content adjustments coming after the design update merges in, including finishing the "Foundations" (only) Workbook, building another Workbook for the "Basics", and possibly some refinements to the slide deck. All over many iterations though.

yep https://github.com/github/guides/pull/51 was something i started on, and then got busy. I think having a short pages guide, and linking out for advance reading to the pages.github.com guide that shows how to use it with jekyll is cool.

This of course doesnt mean there shouldn't be a sort of class that goes through doing it as well. People learn in different ways.

@jordanmccullough Now that the redesign is in 🎇, any ideas about how this can/should relate to the Foundations workbook?

@afeld: With the Training Kit nearing release and the Training site matching in look and feel, the only thing that remains is the content of the Workbook reworking.

PR757 will become the Workbook, rather than the current version which started to look more like a Git MAN page.

However, the the Workbooks are an 📖 to multiple topics. I'd ❤️ seeing a separate one for "Up and Running". The context is for two groups:

  1. A teacher/mentor who needs guidance on topic order and details.
  2. A self-learner where slides don't provide ample details.

The latest iterations on the Foundations, Intermediate, and Advanced slide decks offer more discrete steps to from a starting point with GitHub and Git (Foundations), to command line (Intermediate), and more technical commands (Advanced).

If there's still a need for a separate slide deck or materials centered around how to establish a GitHub Training styled event, that might be worthwhile as a README.md in the Workbooks directory.
