WeakMap isn't supported in IE 10 or Safari 7, so we would need to polyfill it. I'm not a fan of the underscore property names either, but I don't think it's worth the extra dependency or bigger file size.

The MutationObservers polyfill requires a WeakMap polyfill. So you can consider WeakMap part of the Web Component family.
