There is an option "write in legacy OVF 0.9 format for compatibility with other virtualization products", but I have no idea what the disadvantages are or if this works with vmware.

Ok I found the option. I will give it a try and test it. I guess most users will use Virtualbox anyway, so maybe that is not a high priority issue.

I think so. I never heard again from somebody who wanted to use VMware for the virtual machine (maybe it even works now? I can not test that.). Lets close it for now, and if somebody complains, we can reopen or create a new issue.
