This is per-design; the attic is user-controlled, much like the Recycle Bin is on Window or the Trash on Mac:
when your drive gets full on Windows or Mac, the OS doesn't start removing files from there by itself.
You need to empty them manually before you can gain the space they use. The same apply to Greyhole.
This should probably be better documented somewhere.
