One fix would be to use ign-tools instead of GFlags so that the ign gazebo command automatically runs the latest version, and older versions can be used with --force-version.

We can try to get it in by Blueprint.

If we want to handle this as upstream in our applications (instead of just remove the symlinks and leave the versioned commands) I think that Louise suggestion would be the way to go: add some logic to unversioned commands transforming them from symlinks to scripts that handle which version to call.

In Linux distributions the downstream work usually handle different versions using a system-wise mechanism. In Debian/Ubuntu systems we have the alternatives approach that allows the user to list, change, add or delete commands that can be implemented by different programs or different versions (like gcc, sendmail, ...).
