My guess is that there is an old version of wcs.so
in the source tree (perhaps from an earlier run of setup.py develop
). WcsError
was added to that extension only recently. But I've never used readthedocs, so I don't really know how their build environment is set up.

@mdboom I think you're right. I did have the same error locally when running python setup.py egg_info
in the astropy folder and after removing astropy/astropy/wcs/_wcs.so
the problem was gone.
What I don't understand is why this file is apparently not wiped (along with the whole build folder) for tevpy
on the readthedocs server when I follow [these instructions]((https://docs.readthedocs.org/en/latest/builds.html#deleting-a-stale-or-broken-build-environment) and hit this URL:
