My mistake - that should have been
{% set line_1 %}
{{ }} is strictly for expressions, while statements like set go in {% %} tags.
So, {{ line_1 }} is valid, but {{ set line_1 }} is not.
That said, current master solves my issue, so I'm marking this as fixed.
Again, my apologies for the mistake, and thanks for the fix!
