Labels from Google Contacts app are the same as Groups in Fossify Contacts. Please verify if it works the same on your device.

Hi, sorry forgot to reply. I tested the tag feature and have no idea what Google contacts do, but the "groups" feature seems to be different from the AOSP "contact labels".

Scenario: in grapheneOS I would like to create a tag for contacts, and using "Contact scopes" I can give an app permission to only the contacts of that scope. common use cases are crappy messengers that stalk users by creating "who knows whom" networks.

The test group created by fossify contacts did not show up in contact scopes. AOSP contacts has this feature.

Would private groups, not visible by other apps, be sufficient?

not sure what that is. But AOSP contacts (which lineageOS and GrapheneOS both maintain in seperate forks) has these labels I think. The labels seem to be somewhat standard and visible by the OS.

@thestinger maybe you could explain shortly what exact mechanism this is?
