Oh, I just realized I was following instructions for Julia 0.6, not 0.5. I'll try again and close this issue if it works.

Nope, this also fails with the following code, taken from http://mikeinnes.github.io/Flux.jl/v0.1.1/examples/logreg.html:
using Flux, MNIST
data = [(trainfeatures(i), onehot(trainlabel(i), 0:9)) for i = 1:60_000]
train = data[1:50_000]
test = data[50_001:60_000]
m = Chain(

Note that this is resolved by upgrading to Julia 0.6 and using all the latest packages. Closing because this is no longer an issue for me, though it may be an issue for backwards compatibility.
