From the logs, it seems like RPiPlay never received any connection requests. Are all devices in the same network (without any NAT inbetween)?

Yes, they are in the same Wifi network e.g.:
MacBook - 192.168.1.101
raspberrypi - 192.168.1.104

MacBook:.~ me$ traceroute 192.168.1.104
traceroute to 192.168.1.104 (192.168.1.104), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets

I suggest to set up the Pi as a Wifi Hotspot and connect the MacBook/iPhone to that, just in order to factor out anything going on in your network.

ah okay, got the error, I was setting up the raspberry with an ansible playbook, which was concentrating on security and therefore blocking the connection to my devices:

@supersoaker Could you share a bit more detail about what exactly caused the problem and how did you solve it? I seem to be having a similar issue, and would definitely help a lot :)í

Edit: I actually had a problem with name clash, as I tried to use the same name for the RPiPlay service that was already used by another service on my network, but renaming it solved my connection issue.
