I agree with your opinion. I have met the same issue before and thanks for the hint!
The size of the embedding layer is 256001, but the dictionary keeps adding new characters while encoding lines.
Encode the out-of-dictionary character as unk_index instead of some integer above 256000, then mGENRE can continue inferencing.

The BPE encoder is part of mBART so mGENRE has nothing to do with it. I believe that there might be a problem in fariseq as the sentencepiece encoder should output UNK but it doesn't.
