Try restarting steam vr and unity. There seems to be an issue with one of those two things.
The problem isn't with the toolkit but with steamvr or the steamvr unity plugin

Does Unity need SteamVR running? I started Steam VR and afterwards started Unity and now the error is gone. I quit SteamVR and it is still working properly.
Turning off the play area script and toggling it on before testing also seems to work.....

I always find that SteamVR is needed to be running before you start Unity otherwise things go weird.
