You can totally overwrite the apply method to do it any way you'd like, although handler classes are typically a way to chunk up a larger service into use-cases, while aggregates are groups of objects that guard internal consistency, so they are not quite the same. That said, you can apply the events in any way you like, you can even not use the default trait nor do you have to use the same event recording logic. As long as the aggregate is reconstitutable from events and can release newly recorded ones, the rest of the tooling works fine.
