This is not an accurate problem at all, I'm being completely delusional, patch coming through now.

See failed patch: #18 this demonstrates that nix's rustRegistry is not hermetically sealed. My local machine gives me a SHA256 X whereas Travis' machine gives SHA256 Y. Hence we shouldn't introduce side effects into nix's hermetically sealed environment - that being the git
attribute. It would seem I'm not delusional.

Okay we'll have about a week or so of failed travis builds then :-) but at least cargo will build locally. So in the time it takes to publish the merkle.rs fork to crates.io let's manually test the PRs by pulling and building remote branches.
