Spent quite some time today trying to fix this but haven't been able to. 😞

Apparently the searchBar.window needs to be the key window to allow the keyboard to appear. So calling
[self.view.searchBar.window makeKeyAndVisible];
before
[self.view.searchBar becomeFirstResponder];
solved the issue. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
