"Import project" is meant for importing existing erlide projects (created in another workspace). These should have the required metadata already set.
What you seem to want is to create an erlide project with existing sources. Then you should create a new project and in the configuration wizard there is a button "detect paths" that will traverse the directories and add everything that contains Erlang code.
We should make that distinction more visible.
If I misunderstood, please reopen and explain what you mean.
