Same issue Qnap 429. Package utterly unusable.

One thing I found was useful was to run the equivalent command directly in the terminal, but not forking to background.
SSH into the QNAP, copy the executing command from the log, and add a "-d" to the command - this should give you the reason it doesn't start.
I needed to change the port dnsmasq was listening on as Samba Active Directory was grabbing the port first... (I wasn't using dnsmasq for dns, just dhcp..)
