Checking out non-root branches for the first time requires a new linked worktree to be created, and updates be saved to files within the project directories. This means that Synectic (and by extension, the user running Synectic) must have read and write permissions to the directory that the project is stored in.

This issue occurred directly after cloning and opening a project in Synectic for the first time, but the root cause relates to system permissions on directories (which can happen on MacOS and Linux as well). In this specific situation, cloning into the C:/Windows/System32/ directory (which appears to be a system directory) was the cause of the problem.

from synectic.
