@sjordan29 and @ptomasula, I recently came across the xarray-simlab library that might be extremely helpful for us as a guide on how to structure our current and future modeling projects.
I'm particularly interested in fully understanding the concepts they describe in their Modeling Framework, which breaks down the three core classes (i.e. models, processes, variables) used in a modeling workflow. These seem very much in line from what I've been seeing with OGC API & PyGeoAPI.
In addition, xarray-simlab is being developed by some of the people connected to the Pangeo team and appears to adopt some really smart software engineering concepts. See https://xarray-simlab.readthedocs.io/en/latest/about.html#motivation.

Reading RAS HDF data and writing model output has been re-factored. Closing this issue and transferring remaining IO refactoring (boundary and initial conditions) to #17.
