Apparently newer readelf can report something from these stripped object files:
$ readelf --debug-dump test/unit/objs/ppc64le/mcount_loc-issue-1102.ORIG.o | head

Note to self, investigate the following tomorrow:
$ strip --remove-section=.eh_frame --strip-debug --keep-file-symbols
from kpatch-unit-test-objs.
