There are 41,733 strings in words.txt where a hyphen is embedded among letters (i.e. has only letters and hyphens, and begins and ends with letters). Of those, 38,570 have no capital letters -- that doesn't mean they aren't proper nouns, but most proper English nouns are capitalized, so it suggests that there are tens of thousands of legitimately hyphenated strings. Some examples:

• anti-emetic
• bilge-water
• coarse-grained
• dead-center
• electro-osmotically
• yellow-tipped

Perhaps "dead-center" shouldn't be counted as a word, because both "dead" and "center" are words and are already listed. What about "anti-emetic" and "electro-osmotically"?
