Given information I've gleaned from Zach Collins, vfork
and fork
have no memory-copying differences on modern Linux. This was true on old BSD operating systems, where fork
would immediately copy the entire address space of the parent process, and vfork
would not. On modern Linux these days, they share the same address space however the child process operates on copy-on-write, meaning we don't up-front copy the entire address space, but copy slowly as we made writes.
Both fork
and vfork
do differ, both on old BSD operating systems and modern Linux, in that vfork
suspends the parent process until the child either terminates normally or abnormally, or makes a call to exec
. More can be seen from this google search. Fork does not do this.
