Hey @sinistersig
To use the DocumentViewer you hand it a JSON structure which tells the viewer where to get all of the assets it needs to render a document. In other words, you can display any sort of document, so long as you can pre-process it out to a set of images and texts (which is what the full DocumentCloud platform does).

Take a look at http://github.com/documentcloud/docsplit for details on how to split out a PDF/multi-page TIFF/Word doc/Excel spreadsheet into images used by the document-viewer.
