I've had some issues trying to determine how best to go about this, and I think I've figured it out. Instead of building some weird reference specific to youtube links, store youtube links in a standardize format. So basically, whenever we come across a youtube link: extract the video id and convert it into a youtube shortlink. This way, we don't need to worry about treating youtube as some special case relative to other domain handlers, because we'll have handled the "special case" stuff at the point where we identify the link in the first place, which will already be youtube specific code.
And of course, if we're not able to identify the video id, we can just post the youtube url as we found it.
