I got a great tip from Brad the Amazon last night. He pointed me to a one-stop shop for all your cost prediction needs, the aptly named Simply Monthly Calculator. If you fill out your predicted usage on the handy form that pops up (be sure you're in the Oregon region), then you'll get an itemized price prediction like so:
So just $3 for running 12 hours on a m4.xlarge instance with 1GB in and 1GB out. Can't be sure what the actual bill will be, but if this is in the ballpark then I'd say it's pretty affordable for an individual researcher with a medium size job.
