Another nice idea: put in a check so programs will compare the timestamp of their executable with their source code, and recompile themselves (and then re-execute themselves with the same command line arguments) if the source code is newer.

Could also have a "continuous update mode" where the program does this check periodically, and if the source code has changed attempts to recompile itself (showing error messages if any) and regenerate the diagram automatically, so you can just be editing a diagram in an editor and see it updated as soon as you save it.
