It also makes sense to have a vtkDICOMStackSorter class, that sorts the (file, frame) indices into stacks. Right now the slice sorter class does this, but it probably should be done as the first step, before any slice sorting is done. This would also make it easier for me to detect changes in pixel size, which is something I don't check for yet.

More on the StackSorter idea: information about stacks is useful when browsing DICOM files, so the StackSorter should be usable with vtkDICOMDirectory (i.e. it should not be necessary to instantiate a vtkDICOMReader simply to find out how many stacks there are).

The vtkDICOMDirectory class already has a GetMetaDataForSeries() method, so it should be sufficient to supply a query that includes all the attributes that StackSorter needs. These attributes can be found by grepping the current vtkDICOMSliceSorter code.

  • SharedFunctionalGroupSequence
  • PerFrameFunctionalGroupSequence
  • Rows, Columns (not used by SliceSorter, but should be!)
