This actually indicates a bug in the compiler, not in the vscode plugin.
But I cannot reproduce it with the current version of Motoko, where it seems to compile fine, e.g., in the playground. Can you try updating your SDK/Motoko installation and see if the bug persists?

Interesting, I'm using dfx 0.7.1 -- not sure which version of the Motoko compiler is bundled with that.
I will try again when I next update dfx. I've been hesitant about doing so because newer versions of dfx completely change what the generated JavaScript interfaces look like, and it would break my current codebase.

dfx 0.7.1 came with motoko 0.6.1:
