You have to manually add &callback=? to the end of your query string and change the type to jsonp. The reason the jQuery version works is because they added code to automatically insert the jsonp stuff.

Should be pretty similar to jQuery except using type: 'jsonp' rather than dataType: 'jsonp'. I haven't tested with that YQL example but I don't see a reason it wouldn't work with PR 53.

sorry, I see the original jsfiddle was for dataType: 'json' not jsonp. Anyway, PR53 helps a bit by making the only adjustment required for now just changing to dataType: 'jsonp'.
