It already is padded -- 3 characters for line, 2 for column. I figured those would be reasonable, but I guess you hit the area that doesn't cover. I could make it configurable, sure.
EDIT: oops, there are actually two position segments, forgot I split that off. Try using telephone-line-airline-position-segment, that's the padded one (and it's actually padded to 4 and 3 characters, respectively). The plain position segment can't be padded since it's just using mode-line-front-space

Great, maybe it would be useful to have a screenshot for the right side as well, showing the padded position.
