according to XNAT folks cmdline client is usable, needs to be obtained as a part of the browser plugin download
from datalad.
Sample code here: https://github.com/karchie/pyxnat/blob/hcp-db/pyxnat/core/packages.py . There's a bit of dancing involved in this code because first you talk to XNAT, which applies its security model to any requests and then asks the Aspera server for a "transfer spec" that is both a specification of and authorization for the requested download. Then you hand that transfer spec to the ascp executable. Other sites that use Aspera will likely have comparable custom stuff around the transfer.

Thank you Kevin! FWIW, now they seems to provide all kinds of downloads for aspera client, even binary .deb packages (do not see apt repo though. .deb's are converted from .rpms). I believe I have tried to contact open-source division at IBM whenever I have discovered that they bought Aspera -- but never heard back I believe. Anyways, in few years PiedPiper would make all those obsolete ;-)

Dan Marcus shared that there would be a webinar about Aspera extension for git server(s) : http://asperasoft.com/company/webinars/ might be worth checking out if interested @datalad/developers

Six years after the last post here, and three years after the last mention of this issue, I will close it, because it never became critical enough to actually work on it. Its wisdom will be preserved even in its new state.
