Easier access to parent data is probably the main reason to pursue this.
Though if ancestor data is passed to functions, then we will need a substitute for the element index (and group index). Probably code that would use the index should make the index part of the data? Or perhaps the arguments could be {d, i, p, j, …} where p is the parent datum and j is the parent index, and so on up to the selection root.
