Similarly I couldn't find a way to set the current gps location for the start or end point in the search.

The little box at the right hand side of the text boxes offer "Current Location" as one of the options, assuming that location following is on. The same menu will also include any waypoints that have already be set on the map, as well as searching your contacts.
