Rtools version 3.3.0.1959
perhaps I need to upgrade. Also, I couldn't compile package curl to get ver 1.1 so have version 1.0 from binary.

Could you go through each chapter and click knit? That should help pinpoint the offending section.

Another possibility is that you have out of date packages. Would you try running update.packages and reinstalling the book.
