Sounds like you will have to do some trick with the Javascript file itself.

Behavior as custom as this is not supported by the gem.

Take a look at the jQuery autocomplete documentations to see if you can see something useful there

from rails3-jquery-autocomplete.

Sorry to comment on a closed issue, but I found a solution to this without writing any javascript.

if you grab the name as extra_data, and then use update_elements to override the display_value, everything works. For the example above it becomes:

autocomplete :tag, :name, :full => true, :display_value => :display, :extra_data => [:name]

and then in your form (I'm assuming your resource is named "tag")
f.autocomplete_field :name, autocomplete_tag_name_tags_path, :update_elements => {:name => '#tag_name'}

You do end up selecting that column twice, and that could possibly be avoided if the jquery understood a display => value mapping and this gem used it, but that seems like it could be a fairly hefty change.
