I've run four tests:
Rust stable: rustc 1.77.1 (7cf61ebde 2024-03-27)
Rust nightly: rustc 1.79.0-nightly (805813650 2024-03-31)
Rust stable + cross v0.2.5:
x86_64-pc-windows-gnubuild succeeds.i686-pc-windows-gnubuild succeeds.
Rust stable + cross 0.2.5 (085092c 2024-03-08):
x86_64-pc-windows-gnubuild succeeds.i686-pc-windows-gnubuild succeeds.
Rust nightly + cross v0.2.5:
x86_64-pc-windows-gnubuild succeeds.i686-pc-windows-gnubuilds fails withcannot find -lsynchronization.
Rust nightly + cross 0.2.5 (085092c 2024-03-08):
x86_64-pc-windows-gnubuild succeeds.i686-pc-windows-gnubuilds fails withcannot find -lsynchronization.
So in summary, it seems the build failures are specific to using Rust nightly, and to targeting i686-pc-windows-gnu. I had thought I also saw them for x86_64-pc-windows-gnu, but I guess I got confused between the Windows builds.
