Slack feels so detached from github.
People come to github to inform themselves about a project and it is super convenient to just click on the gitter button below to instantly be in touch with the developers and other interested people. The cool stuff about gitter is that you have all your gitter channels of all your favourite projects just next to each other and you can easily follow discussions on various projects in parallel.
It feels more like home :D
Additionally i distrust Slack but thats more a personal point of view.
