when I go down the stairs to the 2nd level of the quest
Are those the stairs from the level with your quest leader (the ones that are blocked by a mysterious force until you get approval from your QL), or the stairs on the level below that?
Did your game ever crash and need recovering? It seems doubtful that's what's going on here, but there is a bug recently fixed in vanilla NetHack that caused stairs to have wacky destinations under some circumstances if a game crashed (or the process otherwise ended without going through the normal saving process) and needed to be recovered.

The stairs were from the first quest level, the one with the quest leader
on it.
Yes, the game crashed often.
I kept playing for as long as i could, but eventually hit a level where it
crashes no matter what I do.

What version of xNetHack is it, for what platform? Did you build it yourself or use a precompiled binary?

precompiled, windows 11 (fully updated), 7.1

There's been no sign of anything like this on hardfought, but it would be very strange if this is happening because of Windows somehow. Sadly, I don't have the ability to debug on Windows.
I don't think it's NetHack/NetHack@cc46da9, unless this only started happening after the game had already crashed and been recovered?

So after some experimentation and it happening a few more times I noticed
that one of the things that makes it happen is when I cast cone of cold or
fireball into a room with a lot of monsters.
It starts going through the text and showing the animation and then after a
certain number of lines the game crashes.
Is there some kind of text buffer or something that might be getting full?
I'll be honest, I briefly studied basic, pascal, and c++ in the mid-90s and
haven't touched computer languages since then.

Current plan for this issue: I'll keep it open until a few months after the next release, then if I haven't heard any further reports like this, I'll close this issue as unable to reproduce the problem.

It's been over a year, don't have any other reports of this and was never able to reproduce it, so I'm closing this issue.
Feel free to reopen if you're still observing this with xNetHack 8.0!
