Without seeing any code it's hard to know specifically what is happening.
My first guesses would be that your destroy method isn't actually destroying your connections.

Do you have any gists or examples you could paste?

We had couple of issues coming together.

  1. We were not releasing connections correctly (we were not passing in the connection object to release())
  2. The way we were trying to stop pm2 process, it was not stopping process but was just orphaning it. hence all the connection were staying occupied and we were under false impression that pool was destroyed.

We corrected both of these issues and now we don't see unaccounted inactive sessions in oracle.

Thanks Sandfox for showing intent to help.
