That guide is not mandatory to read everything, but is a reference to understand what is expected of your recipe, include conandata.yml format, for instance. So feel free to read whatever you want/need.
The gtkmm is not an easy task to be done as first pull request, so you may have some difficult doing it, but don't worry, you can open your pull request in draft mode and ask for help in the PR page.
