Updates on this:
- the daemon keeps the task stack locally. The client doesn't know about it anymore.
- checkin.error pops the top most task from the task stack
The best way to do this at this point is to count the amount of time since the last manual checkin by the task. When it reaches a specified value (say 3 minutes ?) we call checkin.error directly with a message about abnormal termination of the task.
