I've never needed this, but I would gladly accept a patch that enables it.

I've implemented something like this personally. What I do is cause the username to be recorded along with the user_id and user_type, even if the user is stored as an AR object.
That way, you have the class/id if you want to try and grab the actual user object, but if that user object has since been deleted you still have SOME information.
